RBI allows recurring payment for prepaid mobile recharges

The Reserve Bank of India has decided to extend the recurring payment facility Bharat Bill Payment to prepaid mobile connections. In a notification, the Central Bank said that with consistent growth in different biller categories and to facilitate mobile prepaid customers with more options to recharge, it has decided to permit ‘mobile prepaid recharges’ as a biller category in Bharat Bill Payment Systems (BBPS).

Users can now voluntarily opt for recurring payment of prepaid mobile recharges and billers can raise recurring bills in this regard.

Bharat Bill Payment Systems (BBPS)

BBPS started as an interoperable platform for repetitive bill payments. Initially, it could operate in five categories – Direct to Home (DTH), Electricity, Gas, Telecom and Water. Later, the RBI extended the coverage to all categories of billers which raise recurring bills as eligible participants. The platform provides a standardised bill payment experience, a central grievance redressal mechanism

NPCI’s wholly owned subsidiary firm Bharat BillPay Ltd. runs BBPS.
