The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information and Technology has summoned Facebook and Google to appear before it on June 29th. The committee, headed by Dr. Shashi Tharoor would be sitting to hear the view of representatives of the social media giants on the subject of ‘safeguarding citizens’ right and prevention of misuse of social/ online news media platforms. The special emphasis of the meeting would be on women security in the digital space.
The Background
The Committee had earlier summoned Twitter to appear before it on the same subject last week. However, although Facebook has said it is ready to comply with the new intermediary rules, friction caused by the traceability requirement continues to cause wobbling in Facebook and WhatsApp’s Indian business. The meeting could divulge further details into the compliance achieved by these significant social media intermediaries.
